• The post 2016-06-23 Referendum political chaos { inc. Conservative & Labour resignations, challenge from Scotland, legal moves to ensure a prime minister can't just implement Brexit without parliament (Mischcon), half baked ignorant statements ignoring individual civil rights embedded in treaties beyond mere EU, etc} Creates time & space through to the Autumn & beyond, to think deeper, & better consider all aspects of a possible Brexit, rather than stupidly take the narrow 2016-06-23 Referendum margin as knee jerk authorisation to leave.
• It was infuriating to listen to radio in UK for days after 2016-06-23 Referendum, to repeatedly hear lots in ignorance say
• "We've all had a chance to vote, now we must implement it" IT' S A LIE ! We did Not _All_ have a chance to vote !!
• BRITAIN STOLE OUR VOTES : Author is a British citizen, was physically in UK (Kent) on the day & not eligible to register or vote
• It would be irresponsible to push Brexit through without serious House Of Commons & Lords multi readings & debate.
• Some in UK who voted Leave EU really just intended a kick or warning to the EU Brussels bureaucracy, some probably didn't expect a majority with immediate consequences. Even many who voted Remain In EU also consider the Brussels bureaucracy overpaid, bloated, forcing ever more regulations on us too fast, annoying almost all members with their wide interference. Bloat worsened by speaking every language in the EU, with costs of interpreters & translators, delays & mis-understanding. Even wasting a 1/4 of their time each month in Strasbourg. Many citizens of the EU outside the UK also think we need a looser Europe with flexibility, moving slower together, not forced fast by overpaid EU bureaucrats driving their own agenda of grand visions.

  • Whether investing in new production lines, or lubricating foreign palms to place "invisible export" contracts in UK, etc, It takes time to recoup investments. More reason for a bust than a boom.
  • Bankers in London fear for jobs. France & Germany will make bids yet again to shoulder out the London finance market.
  • Would an EU citizen buy a house in London today ? With some idiot UK politicians saying existing EU people in UK might have to go home ? Half a Million French in London author recalls ? Maybe same again for Poles ? Whatever the numbers are, won't be good for London & SE property market
  • A bad time to `invest' in UK property. (Except perhaps not a bad time for buyers with Euros or dollars as pound is worth a lot less ).
  • Some in UK will start trying to drive harder bargains courtesy of Brexit fears.
  • Britain in 20 years might or not do better outside EU, but short term next year or 2, UK will do worse, The disaster of Brexit will take time to unfold. (When West Germany damaged its economy acquiring East Germany, it was a 20+ year long financial disaster (though benefited NATO)).

  • Many of us are still intensely British & visit often, have investments & property in UK etc; eg author was in his UK high street on the day, encouraging people to vote, telling them Britain had stolen my right to vote.
  • Britain & Eire are the only 2 countries in European Union who steal the right to vote from citizens outside the country (USA also doesn't steal); That has so far only been challenged to UK' s national Supreme Court, not to an International Court

UK should Not be less democratic than Austria !
• Buy time for public to better understand Brexit issues in the UK, currently populace have a different slant than MPs. Come Autumn, if/as the economy worsens, & some electors who merely wanted to give the Brussels bureaucracy a kick may start to realise they've kicked themselves too.
• Buy time for other EU countries to use Brexit as a lever to sack & discipline some top Brussels Federal Eurocrats for forcing the EU to be so overbearing. Not just British want to dump bounding Eurocrats; as Daniel Hannan MEP said, many Eurocrats such as Chris Patten, Neil Kinnock, & now Jean Claude Juncker etc, are only there after losing a national election.

  • 1985: Parliament gave right to vote to Brits abroad for 5 years.
  • 1989: Extended to 20 Years.
  • 2000: Reduced to 15 years: Gerrymandered Stealing votes from British abroad
  • 2016: Britain's Faked Un-Democratic Brexit referendum (2016-06-23). UK Parliament stole votes from British already in the EU who would be most affected & most knowledgeable.

EU MISTAKES

• Sure the EU screws up too, but probably less than idiot nationalist politicians, & at least with different cultures & different ways of solving problems, by exchanging ideas, they have the chance to hear of better solutions, & learn from mistakes of others.
  Here's some things EU have screwed up in chronological order:
  • 2 Capitals: Brussels & Strasbourg.
  • CAP = Common Agricultural Policy: subsidises tobacco growers even ! & subsidises mega agricultural business like sugar beet in UK. (OTOH Britain's far more (too!) efficient practices screwed too: dust bowls near the Wash/ Norfolk area, & cooking offal at too low a temp & returning to vegetarian animal food chain led to BSE).
  • GDPR : General Data Protection Regulation
    The EU law that combined with a uniquely German law permitting 3rd party predator lawyers to sue on behalf of clients they don't yet have, forced this author to take loads of photos etc off the net.

• The UK Government is a thief, liar & enemy to British abroad:

  • Thieving 3.7M rights to vote globally; inc 750,000+ in EU;

  There is no limit to how short a stay counts as living in the UK, if you are British. I.e. you can reset your 15 years out of the UK just by going to the UK for a couple of weeks. Register to vote at that address, then register for a postal vote. All can be done online.

  This was told to author by the sister of a friend who is a UK lawyer. My friend has lived outside UK for 23 years, but still got a BREXIT postal vote because he registered to vote at his parent' s address 2 years ago.

  • All very dis-satisfied with Consul uttering copious Government soft soap not believed by anyone present. Various interjections on rubbish such as "EU keeping UK waiting", & "negotiations in good faith on both sides"
    (European negotiators probably somewhat wary of a delaying, chaotic British government, surviving on bribed Northern Ireland votes, claiming to represent a riven nation, that denies its citizens abroad votes, & threatens EU citizen rights in UK, thus imperilling UK citizen rights in EU.)
  • David mentioned, re. Government fumbling: it had been British foreign policy for 500 years to split & balance European forces. Britain has now managed the opposite: To unite Europe against Britain.
  • David volunteered he could contact authorities to investigate citizen status issues if only Consul would give him high level introductions instead of currently working bottom up. Consul ignored the offer.
  • Ingrid said organisers of citizens impacted by Brexit were self financing expenses, (particularly in Berlin), including expenses of visiting government in UK. No offer of help from UK government, Consul more than ignored that request for support, said they couldn't support political parties. Ignored we're from all political parties, this s apolitical, only thing in common is we're British, imperilled by Britain& deprived of right to constituency MPs to represent us.
  • Consul said he would _Not_ relay to London the depth of concerns & annoyance from the meeting, despite UK has deprived us of constituency MPs to represent us.
  • Consul said he was willing to come again.

    After Formal End:
  • Numerous people observed, despite the Consul uttering government rubbish, most speakers had still articulated their disbelief, fears, & anger, in a very British under stated manner, while many other nationals would have reacted much more vigorously.
  • Many suspect the Consul will not present to London the full breadth as well as certainly not the depth of our problems, concerns, etc.
  • Is a Consul any benefit to us ?
    • This time (as last) nothing was learned, nothing solved, nothing gained from the Consul.
      However, we did learn from each other, so is a Consul merely useful as a PR catalyst, to draw extra audience ?
    • Is government purpose for consular attendance, merely to be seen to go through the motions, make an audience feel they' ve been listened to, but do Nothing, Not help, & provide Nothing ?
      (Not pure cynicism: To consult trade union representatives, with intent to do nothing after, is a technique this author first observed in junior management in his early 20s. - Repeats play less well to large audiences of professionals ;-).
    • Is a Consul best a mere mouthpiece of a floundering government of the day ?
    • Or do Consuls etc as long term civil servants bear a deeper duty to support citizens abroad who find themselves suddenly assailed by a mass of problems, (amazingly triggered not by foreign host countries, but by British government incompetence).
    • Consuls etc as civil servants are NOT political appointees to pander to politics of the day, unlike eg USA ambassadors appointed by a president.
    • When more stable British governments returns, career reviews may not be so rosey for civil servants that merely pandered to deposed politicians.
    • Could Consuls help Ex pats with Brexit impacts ? Many cynics say "Useless to us, just interested in promoting trade."
      Even such consuls would be foolish to refuse to warn London: British "Soft Power" degrades as British Ex Pats tell local foreign associates: Don't trust Britain! It stole our votes, scared British they might lose health treatment, scared us to apply for foreign citizenship; & scared EU citizens in UK too.
    • Tell the brexit@ mail list or a meeting announced on the brexit@ mail list, if you have ideas to protect Ex-Pats from the impacts of Brexit.
  • Plan next is to take a summer break for a couple of months, perhaps just another Brexit Group Beer Garden, without need for organisers to spend lots of time arranging. PS Brexit also gets discussed at meetings of Beer Gardeners & Faraday etc groups.

    • Many of us agreed the meeting was very good, & Maria Noichl refreshingly open. I cant hope to summarise her many points & answers, or many questions & points from audience. If others publish text I would gratefully link to it. A few notes:

      • Copenhagen Criteria
      • As it takes 10 years+ for new nations to enter EU, a revised Article 50 could benefit by addition of a 2nd leaving statement, a confirmation with a time lapse of maybe 3/ 5/ 7 years from the 1st notice.
      • European Parliament is binary, will only get a yes/no vote, the rest will come from the council.
    • Others made many good points, then I added a few approx. as below, followed by other people:
      • EU should challenge usage of word "democracy" that UK PM falsely asserted in her 2017-03-29 - Article 50. 3.7 Million votes denied is Not democracy to European standards.
      • One could understand if some EU MEPs might be tempted, to give UK citizens in the EU the same bad treatment UK will enforce on EU citizens in UK; to attempt to put pressure on UK, but UK does not care British Abroad, happy to abuse us, all they want is trade, so British abroad are worthless as hostages to barter.
      • EU should stay hard (as she says European Parliament intends) & not give UK a good deal, just a neutral deal. A thieving lieing abusive UK government does not deserve a good deal.
      • UK govt. may hopefully yet break, esp. when among issues eg N Ireland's border problem re-surfaces.
      • As the problems unfold, inc. eg later in Ireland (EU want a border somewhere. DUP (May' s crutch) objects between NI & GB. Others don' t want a border between N & S Ireland to avoid more Troubles) MPs may increasingly break Theresa May & Jeremy Corbin's whips, & vote issues on conscience, not to suit party leader[s] careers.

  British most places probably discussed Brexit after turkey etc In Munich too with an eclectic mix: More Remainers (also annoyed at stolen votes) + 2 rare (resident in the EU) Leavers (one of whom would have voted Leave to scare the EU, though not expecting a Leave majority, & one committed Leaver who now doesn't believe Brexit will happen (*), & some German spouses/ friends etc. All but 1 Brit Remainer & 1 Brit Leaver had recently taken German dual nationality to protect themselves against the UK leaving the EU. All but one (*) were not sure what would happen. Below attempts to sketch a consensus of probabilities: Electorate will tell / email / write MPs : "You lot have sleep walked Too Long! Seize Control! Fix the Mess!" Parliament reconvenes 2019-01-07. 2 days later Theresa May's delaying tactic finally expires 2019-01-09, Debate preceeding "Meaningful vote" starts. 3[+] Votes to come: Jeremy Corbin eagerly proposes a no confidence in the government. Loses, Conservatives not wanting to be trounced out of office Jeremy Corbin (reluctantly, him being a Brexiteer, but not wanting to cede leadership of Labour MPs) proposes a no confidence in Theresa May' s deal, & Wins Jeremy Corbin more reluctantly, or others eagerly, propose a Referendum, which probably wins Commons eyes the imminent Deadline 2017-03-29 23:00 GMT Commons argues for at least a week on the words on the referendum (of 2016-06-23), Options: Some Brexiteer extremists will propose: Hard Brexit or Deal Brexit. Rejected Some Remainers will propose: Remain in EU or Theresa May's Deal Brexit. Probably Rejected. Many Others might propose: Remain in EU, Or Theresa May's Deal Brexit, Or Hard Brexit: Probably a Majority A few will suggest Norway: Rejected as no time. A few will suggest Canada Plus: Rejected as no time ( Canada took 7 years, not 2 months). Some may propose a cascaded second transferable preference vote, for if 1st preference has too few votes. Most probably that will be rejected. Commons Maybe debates if the 750,000 Brits resident in Europe with no UK vote , should be finally allowed a vote, or the 3,700,000 global Brits with no vote, (perhaps suggesting the last reading of Votes For Life be brought forward). Probably quickly discarded for lack of time, especially as Brits abroad not already registered with UK at which foreign addresses, No Time to register, unless EU extends, Expect Brits abroad to be screwed again by Britain, the 2nd least democratic country in Europe. Once Parliament votes to authorise a specific Brexit Referendum, EU has said it could/ would allow an extension of 2 year deadline on Article 50. Which UK would then want. But EU would have to persuade all 27 other member states to agree. Maybe EU would achieve a simple numeric deadline extension, so long as all 28 avoid trying to change other words & no new deal shuffling. Referendum would then take weeks. Some country not in Europe once took just 1.5 weeks, (ref. requested) - Electoral Commission normally takes weeks to months, but they' ve been gearing up ready in case. Referendum happens. Count is returned. Probably more for Remain, as demographics have changed, & some Brexiteers see Theresa May' s deal as worse than Remain & some other ex Brexiteers sees the nightmare chaos looming. Commons argues for a week or two on what the referendum means & to do They'll probably decide to stay in EU (for now) as: Change of sentiment. Change of demographics, new young voters, oldies dead. The deal's a mess, too late to change Hard brexit far too damaging. Time needed If necessary to sack the PM by the Commons, repeatedly no confidenced. Time needed MPs decide a candidate for temporary one issue national emergency Prime Minister. Possibly LibDem leader as Cons & Lab wont trust each other. Time needed Queen formally invites someone to form a [temporary] government of national unity (like war time). (it does Not have to be leader of largest party, history shows constitution allows PMs from minority parties, just we haven' t had one in a long while), (+ Parties might split for a while, & reform later) Couple Of Days [New?] PM Drafts one Paragraph "UK withdraws Article 50 letter of 2017-03-29, UK shall remain a member of the EU. [Sorry for past inconvenience ?]" If deadline is tight, probably by Ambassador in Brussels, & paper copy by RAF fighter jet flown from RAF Northolt West London, if desperate or for a spot of theater ;-) (Civil planes get disrupted for eg Gatwick drones, Icelandic Volcanic dust etc) EU can not refuse withdrawal, suggested by ECJ - Court official 2018-12-04. Confirmed by full court see 2018-12-10. Later depending on Referendum & Commons, PM might warn EU verbally, not in writing that UK may again want to leave EU, but that next time round both sides should allow more time to negotiate better, considering that eg the Canada deal took 7 years. & that if a next time formal written notice would only be issued to a 2 year deadline, after most progress already negotiated. Maybe the old EU idea of a 2 speed Europe might re-arise, & UK & other EU states might decide the outer ring suits UK & some other states better. Quibbles: Various specious quibbles may be raised why things supposedly can' t happen, but don't necessarily believe them, if push comes to shove, the Commons could force it. Quibbles might include eg constitutional assertions of impossibility; But if Parliament finally decides to seize control there may be numerous emergency points of order, Order of business can change, parties could temporarily re-align, PM & government could be [temporarily] dumped for duration of the issue, A quick referendum could be forced even if not 100% accurate, Lords & Queen could be accelerated, etc. OR CRASH & STACK - MPs could continue to be irresponsible, allow themselves to continue being party whipped, Not make it a matter of conscience, & Not seize control from the Brexiteers Theresa May & Jeremy Corbin. UK could paralyse & crash into a hard no deal Brexit, that not many would profit from, (except those invested in a UK industry & Sterling crash, and a few multi-millionaire Brexit promoters keen to avoid the EU's new 2019 law that will force them to pay the UK more tax, & some who believe the media they bought/ influenced, etc.)

David from stage & Ingrid from floor gave useful information but British in Bavaria also contributed to making the Consul's large meeting look good to his boss: The foreign government & mandarins in Whitehall that abuse us, & deny us votes & MP representation & soon MEP's representation too. BiB seem far more useful than consulate, campaigning with host country Germany to ease residence permit applications for Brits. (I hope David & Ingrid's travel expenses to Berlin next week might be paid by Consulate, but I'd guess not). Salaried Consulate & FCO don't care much about British abroad, just encourage us to take foreign nationality to get rid of us as their problem, Meeting Time Was Incredibly Inefficiently Wasted: - Not much time spent giving generic info pertinent to all, masses of time after on a sequence of boring individual cases better discussed 1 to 1. - The Consul (not announced on web invite, even after event), had brought 2 ladies from Kreis Verwaltung Referat who answered question in a friendly & informed manner, but one spoke only German, so endless translation to English, many didn' t need, on individual's problems. - Endless boring questions of detailed personal circumstances, near all to KVR ladies that would have been better in private session to KVR, not wasting the time of hundreds in audience, & then repeated in English - Loads of people couldn't ask questions. Many left early. - I intercepted the lazy microphone stroller to tell him quietly "Time for some questions to _ Consul_, not just the other two. I have a question for _ Consul_ !" He ignored it. He failed to ask questioners what topics, to assure variety. - I had a quiet word with David on stage "How about some Questions to Consul!" David not interested. All questions going to KVR Me: "This meeting was advertised as with the _ Consul_ !" Consul latched that (give Consul his due there!). - Just 2 people from floor raised non personal-only problems (that I recall) of wider non personal interest: Ingrid, then me later. - My point was: "As 750,000+ of us have no votes, no MPs, & PM Theresa May lied in Para 3 line 2 of Art. 50, that referendum was democratic, & as MPs still are un-informed & say it was full free & fair, & as we asked the last Consul to report this back to London, & _As We Have NO MPs_ - Did last Consul reported this to London ?" [Applause followed, Thanks!] New Consul: "Yes", Alan in loud aside to me "AND ... ?" The Consul Gave No Information! No response to our previous numerous complaints to old Consul at previous meetings. The Meeting Was A Horrible Waste Of Opportunity: - Much time was wasted on personal cases of little relevance to many. - At end I asked David on stage to announce people could email MPs via parliament.uk [& there was an EU petition for European citizenship to sign]. He wasn' t interested, said it could go in newsletter later. Wrong! : Today & This week is ideal to email MPs! The EU petition needs regular plugging, not least 'cos we may no be eligible to sign it in 2.5 months ! - The petition to Queen could have been considered/mentioned, that BiB have evaded for a year. berklix . org / queen/ - David could have called for a discussion at the end, eg how to influence UK decision makers. BiG/BiB should consider if its worth continuing to bless Consul's meetings with their name. A year back, BiG/BiB might have drawn more attendance because of Consul presence. Now meetings organised by Consul largely waste time, counter productive in that we don't control them, & they distract while the clock ticks. We should be spending some time fighting Brexit, not just forever hearing the same old German citizenship & permits questions.

    Hi pm@bbc.co.uk, Luke Jones interviewed people in Stockton on Tees N.E. England today, for Radio 4 s PM Programme, searching under represented regions & views on the election:

    A big group of electors not interviewed by the BBC is British abroad: British non resident in the UK for less than 15 years can still vote, & will vote as they know how Brexit will drastically impact British resident in the EU more than British resident in the UK & NI.

    Please interview some British abroad especially those whose vote has not yet been robbed by the 15 year rule. Ask them which way & why they will be voting. The "why" may include:

    Mr Johnson s hard Brexit will damage perhaps 1.5 ? million British in the EU who will loose rights to live & work in the countries they are in, & loose social security & health insurance etc. Some will move back homeless to UK, loosing friends & business contacts becoming extra burdens on UK NHS & social security.

    Some of the British in Europe will be allowed to stay in EU, if they successfully jump bureaucratic hurdles fast enough. (In Germany, after 34 years, I got 3 months notice, some towns in France apparently issue just a few weeks notice).

    Brexit has coerced many British to take dual foreign nationality. After Brexit, dual won't be possible in Germany, so British will be forced to renounce British citizenship to obtain just foreign citizenship.

    750 Thousand British living in Europe, got NO vote in the 2016 Brexit Referendum, & will get NO vote in this election, 110 countries allow citizens abroad to vote, but Britain steals the right to vote after 15 years abroad.

    Those extra 750K British in EU should have 10 MPs pro rata to represent us. berklix.eu/brexit/#extra_mps But We have No Votes, No MPs to represent us, & No BBC journalists interview us.

    Even with all savings, pension, house & family members in UK & frequent visits, including on referendum or election day, we still can't vote.

    Successive Conservative manifestos have lied that 3.4 million British abroad globally would get the right to vote, but we have not.

    Last time Britain stole so many votes from British citizens, the victims were called Americans, & the UK economy lost the War of Independence.

    • Last Chair of Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament was Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC no longer a Member, but was most recently the Independent MP for Beaconsfield, and left the Commons on 6 November 2019. Dominic Grieve gave a talk a while back and although he was bound not to disclose any of the contents of the report, it was clear that they would have been highly damaging to the Brexit case. Johnson threw him out of the party and he did not get re-elected as an independent, unfortunately.

• Young British in the UK will lose their right to easily work a couple of years on the continent, for career advancement & adventure, & will criticise the old fogies who blighted their careers, voting for Brexit.
• British abroad will curse the Stolen Brexit Referendum of 2016-06-23 that imperils their continued residence, work & life abroad in the EU.
• The most dynamic workers may emigrate from the damaged UK, no longer to the EU, but further globally, with less incentive to return once the break from UK & Europe is achieved.
• Masses of British might be forced home from EU (eg masses retired in Spain) back to live in the UK, burdening UK housing stocks & NHS, unless a Brexit deal is done.
• Exposure of the Lie "We all had a vote - now we must live with it!" - 3.7 Million were denied a vote - 760,000 in Europe
• Idiocy over-ruled: Those who deny British Abroad a vote.

• Scotland / Wales / N. Ireland revolt to remain in EU ? Or London independence ? Declaring eg: London declares independence from the UK, (UDA, Rhodesia style) , & will operate as a city state like Singapore, & joining the EU [with Scotland], or co-operating with the EU, Norway style.
• British of Internet generations will increasingly out vote the dieing old fogies of Empire.
• Some Brexit advocates claim Brexit is final, but it is no more final than was the `finality. of The war to end war aka World War One ... followed by World War Two.
• Britain may later choose or Need to rejoin the EU later, likely on worse terms than Brexit forces on us now, (eg loss of rebate, compulsory Euro for future members etc).
